2017 OVR High Performance Program
Additional Tryout for Girls High Performance Teams Announced. See Below
The Ohio Valley Region will once again participate in the USAV High Performance (HP) Championships. The championships will be held in Ft. Lauderdale from July 18 - 22nd. The OVR teams will compete against teams from other regions, USAV HP teams and International teams.
Please note that selection for participation in the OVR HP program is different that selection for the USAV program. To be considered for the OVR team you must participate in our tryouts. Trying out at the one of the HP tryouts held in conjunction with a qualifier/bid is for consideration for one of the USAV programs - everything from a USAV camp to the Junior National Team.
The OVR will sponsor four teams, two boys' and two girls' teams for this International Competition. The process for getting involved with the OVR HP program is by tryout only. Due to the timing of their respective seasons, the selection process for the boys and girls is slightly different. This year, we will field a girls' Future Select Team and a Select Team. The age breakdowns are listed below. This is the 2nd year of the two year age bracket. It is the first time that USAV will offer a playing division for the Future Select Girls. Next year, we will go back to offering Select and Youth Divisions.
In addition to the Travel Teams, we are adding a HP Developmental Camp Opportunity for girls this year. This will allow players who are not selected for the travel team yet are interested in additional high level summer training to do so at a lower cost and less time commitment than that which is required for the travel teams. Information is below.
2017 Boys' Tryouts
We will field a team in the Youth Division and the Select Division. Youth Boys are those born in the years 1999 and 2000. Select Boys are those born in 2001 and 2002 or after. There are no age or grade waivers for HP. The player's birth year is used.
More information about the age groups
The boys' tryouts were held at three different locations/dates. The goal was to select 8-10 boys from the tryout for each age division who will be invited to the training camp AND the competition in Florida. If any spots remain available after these tryouts, we may have an additional tryout after the completion of the boys' high school season in June.
The head coach for the Youth Division will be Kyle Mars. Coach Mars is the head men's volleyball coach at Hiram College. He will be assisted by Nathan Matthews. For the Select Division, Glenn Freed will be the head coach. Coach Freed is the head coach at Ambridge Area High School and Beaver Valley Premier VBC. He will be assisted by Dylan Kembre.

We will hold a tryout for the Future Select and Select Travel teams on Friday, April 7th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Columbus Convention Center. From that tryout, up to 24 girls from each age division will be invited to return for a 2nd tryout on Friday, May 12, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Columbus Convention Center. In order to be considered for the travel team, you must attend the tryout on April 7th and return to the call back tryout in May. Depending on the turnout for the April tryout, we may invite additional players to the May callback. Unlike prior years, the May tryout IS NOT a make-up tryout. After the May tryout, 10 players and 2-4 alternates from each age group will be chosen to represent the OVR at the USAV HP Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, July 18-22.
The age breakdown is as follows:
Select: Born in the years 2002 and 2003
Future Select: Born in the years 2004 and 2005 or after.
There are no waivers for High Performance and the age requirements are different than they are for the club season. They follow the FIVB age requirements.
Additional Tryout for Girls High Performance Teams Announced
We have decided to add a second tryout for the Girls HP Teams. We have been contacted by several interested players who will not be available to attend the first tryout on April 7th due to a tournament scheduling conflict.

Registration will begin at 5:00 p.m. and the tryout will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The cost for the tryout is $50.00 if registered on-line by 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 27th.
Players who are interested in participating on a Select or Future Select team should plan to tryout on April 7th or April 28th and if selected return for the final call back tryout on May 12th at the Columbus Convention Center. 10 players and 2-4 alternates from each age group will be selected after the call back tryout to train and compete at the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

OVR HP Developmental Camp Registration Process
If you are not selected for the travel team but are interested in participating in High Performance developmental camp, you will be invited to register for camp. Camp will be held July 7-9th at Capital University. Camp will be limited to the first 50 players who sign up from the tryout process. We will have a Future Select and Select Division at camp and the camp will be run by high level coaching staff. If we do not fill the 50 spots from the players who tryout in April and May, we will open it up to other interested OVR players. The cost for the Developmental Camp is $350.00 and includes room and board and all training and coaching. If you make the travel team and wish to also participate in the developmental camp as well, you may do so at an additional cost of $150.00.
The camp will be directed by Bouaketh Chanthavisouk. Bou is currently the College of Wooster Assistant Coach. In 2015 was selected as the AVCA DII National Assistant Coach of the Year while coaching at Gannon University in Erie, Pa. Bou has over 15 years of coaching experience. She will be assisted at camp by a cadre of collegiate and club coaches.
The player's fees are supplemented by generous support from the OVR. Without the funding provided to the program the cost for participation would be nearly double.
