Executive Director's Report
- Ron is continuing contract negotiations for future seasons, providing direct benefit to both the Region and its sponsors.
- (Terry Miller announced that he will get online.)
- Ron distributed OVR Championship dates for 2006 through 2009, which will combine Bids with Regionals.
- Convention Center arrangements permit us some flexibility in court and camp space layout for the Junior championships. Ron will work with Bob and Bill to put on the best possible event.
- Entry is low for the Big Top Volleyball tournament in Charleston. Incentives and alternative formats will be offered to ensure that the tournament is a success.
High Performance
- USA Volleyball is restructuring its education program. Don will have more information after meetings in Colorado.
- Certifications granted by non-approved IMPACT instructors will not be accepted.
- Don recommended 10 large IMPACT clinics next year, 2 in each of 5 geographical areas. Don will soon be the next instructor for IMPACT instructors, and he will be working on the new IMPACT instructor’s manual.
- Close to 375 coaches have been IMPACT-certified so far; over 500 will be certified this season.
- HP is proceeding smoothly. It’s not known yet which 2 divisions the VolleyClassic will host. Tryouts will be the Friday night of Bids.
Men's Open teams
- Micki noted that the Open clubbing policy creates a problem with entry deadlines because players don’t know their teams until within days of the tournament.
- The 1-week entry deadline is a region deadline that applies to Open teams, just as it does to all others.
Regionals
- The entry deadline is April 1, but the April 10 weekend will still be considered for seeding. Pools will be posted the week of Regionals.
- On Saturday, the OVR will also offer 1 court of coed, 1 court of U-Volley men’s, and 1 court of U-Volley women’s. Keith will organize those non-championship tournaments.
Boys' Championships
- Keith secured Capital University.
- Brian noted that it’s time now to line up a larger facility for next year. Various facilities were suggested, with the main constraint being that the tournament must occur on the last weekend in February.
- Brian advocated the OVR hosting a prominent, inter-regional tournament. Keith mentioned that out-of-region inquiries have been coming in for the Boys’ Championship. Bob stressed that the OVR Regional Championship tournaments are for OVR teams only.
Event Responsibility
- From time to time, certain tournaments may have to be cancelled or relocated. However, the OVR website is merely a vehicle for advertisement, and the OVR is not a promoter for any event for which it is not expressly noted as being the promoter. The OVR is not responsible for events promoted by others.
Uniforms
- Teams will be required to have identical uniforms by March 1. Teams showing up illegally attired would forfeit.
Player Officials
- Only 6 showed up for the Friday clinic, none on Saturday.
- Brian and Terry pooled teams, who overwhelmingly favor professional officials, even if it would raise entry fees by $25-50. Brian will poll the membership.
Uniforms
- Teams will be required to have identical uniforms by March 1. Teams showing up illegally attired would forfeit.
Waivers
- Waivers for all members must be sent to the Steve Donahue, not retained by individual clubs and teams.
- A new, expanded waiver will be developed for next season.
Restructuring of Officials' Clinics
- Very high attendance at Westerville requires a different approach. Brian is working on structures, locations, and presentation materials for next year’s clinics.
- The Westerville clinic will remain on the first Saturday in December, although it conflicts with the NCAA tourney.
- 115 officials remain to be certified; additional dates are being lined up (KSU, ONU, Presidents’ Cup).
- Patches will be issued to 17s and 18s, who can then work 12s and 13s.
Junior Officials
- Barb has handed out 9 packets to clinicians, and has lined up about a dozen clinics throughout the region.
- The board discussed using officials for clinic (training + rating) days.
- Barb will continue to develop the junior officials’ program. Nick will offer online recording of juniors’ clinics and certifications by club directors to accommodate the region’s expected 2,000 referees and 2,000 scorekeepers.
Future Board Meetings
- August 12-15, 2004, Mohican State Park.
