OVR LIVE: Web Services Connecting the Ohio Valley Region
What is OVR LIVE, and what are web services?
OVR LIVE is a set of web services that facilitates interaction between the Ohio Valley Region's data services and others. Development is underway for services to improve communications and offer new functionality both to our member clubs and to the USA Volleyball national office, and additional services will be added as new needs emerge. OVR LIVE is one instance of a more general framework of web services designed to facilitate communications and and to improve efficiency throughout hierarchies of sports organizations.
Web services are programmatic interfaces that allow application-to-application communication, expanding the utility of the World Wide Web beyond a person browsing a site to far more sophisticated interactions between applications, sites, and data repositories.
Current Status
A prototype of OVR LIVE was deployed on February 17, 2004 for testing by Kaepa Borderline Juniors, who host many large, multi-site tournaments each season. That particular web service allows the tournament director to take full advantage of the OVR's tournament support system, while at the same time maintaining his tournament information locally with no extra work or duplication of effort. The local tournament information goes beyond what is or can be offered on the OVR site, containing additional detail on officiating assignments and sponsors particular to his club.
To see the fully functional result, browse any of Borderline's 2004 tournaments, for example their February 28 event, which receives up-to-the-minute team information from the the OVR website.
Additional services and documentation are being developed, and details will be announced here when available.
