Tournament Reports

Day 1

Hello from Ft. Lauderdale. Day 1 is over and the Select Girls are undefeated in matches and 6-1 in sets. The Youth Girls are 0-2 in matches and 1-6 in sets. The Boys are 0-2 in matches and 2-6 in sets. Coaches, while not pleased with the losses, are pleased with the effort and look to improve tomorrow.

Days 2 and 3

The Youth Girls, playing in the International Youth Division, finished the day at 1-1. They lost their first match in 3 and won their second match in 3. They appeared to finally put everything together in their second match and as the #4 seed in their pool, they beat the #2 seed- the Southern California Regional HP Team. Their goal is to win the bottom half of the bracket, since their first two losses put them out of medal contention. The girls who were on the team last year told me that this was their first win in 2 years. They did not win a match last year in the National Youth Division.

The Select Girls playing in the National Select Division are 3-1 overall and split yesterday. They lost a tough 4 set match to the Keystone Region and beat the Aloha Region. They will play their final match of pool play this morning. If they win, they will be in gold - a loss will put them in silver. They are playing well.

The Boys are playing in the very tough International Youth/Select Division and while they have not won a match, they are playing a high level of volleyball and have taken the USA HP Teams to the brink, losing tough sets 27-29. Last night, they played USA White and took Set #2 off of them. A highlight of that match was a joust between our 5'9" setter and the 7' MH on the USA team. We won the joust!

They finish their pool play today and are hoping to finally break through for a victory.

Day 3

All 3 HP Teams started strong yesterday with wins. Select beat the USA Select Team in 3 to advance to the upper bracket and a chance to play for gold. Unfortunately, they lost a heartbreaker in 5 to the Florida HP team. They will play for silver and a chance to finish 5th. The Youth Girls won their first match in 3 against USA Select Silver and met Puget Sound for the final match of pool play. They, too lost a 5 set marathon match-coming back down 0-2 to force a 5th set. The final score of set 5 was14-16. The Boys won their first match in the morning easily in 3 and with a win in their afternoon match, they would be playing for silver. Down 0-1 to the USA Continental Team, they came back and won 3 straight. They will be playing for silver this morning and are pleased with their improvement over last year's performance.

The Girls' Youth Team and the Boys will finish up today, and the Girls' Select plays one match tomorrow morning.

Final HP Results

The Girls' Select Team finished their tournament with a win in the silver consolation this morning. They beat the Northern California Region in 3 sets. Overall, they had a match record of 5-3 and finished 7th out of 24 teams. Two of their losses were to the the 2nd and 3rd place overall finishers.

The Boys' Youth/Select Team finished tied for 7th-an improvement over last year's finish of 14th.

The Girls' Youth Team finished 14 out of 18 teams in the International Division. Although they were disappointed with their finish, they competed in a higher level division last year and had the same number of match wins.
